Durante algo más de tres décadas, la vida profesional de David Hollowell estuvo dedicada al arte. Además de trabajar como profesor de arte, sus aclamadas pinturas de ilusión 3D se han presentado en exposiciones prestigiosas. En 2018, el hombre de 71 años comenzó a llevar su talento a una escala mayor, transformando el granero de su familia en un mural inmersivo.
Luego, en mayo de 2021, Hollowell se cayó del techo de su casa, lo que provocó una lesión cerebral traumática que provocó afasia, un trastorno que afecta la capacidad de una persona para comunicarse a través del habla o el lenguaje escrito.
Si bien Hollowell no pudo acceder a las palabras como antes, su capacidad para pintar imágenes detalladas y fascinantes se ha mantenido notablemente intacta. Y su hija, Adrienne, una administradora de TikTok autoproclamada, está decidida a compartir su trabajo y viaje con tantas personas como sea posible.
“Realmente quería que la gente supiera quién era mi padre”, compartió Adrienne en una entrevista con CNN. Por eso creó la cuenta con la premisa jocosa de “hacer famoso a mi padre”.
Hasta ahora se ha logrado el objetivo: más de 196.000 personas siguen la historia de Hollowell, a menudo comparando su trabajo con el de MC Escher y Michelangelo.

Las pinturas no son lo único que se comparte en el canal de TikTok. Adrienne también documentó el progreso de su padre a través de videos de ejercicios vocales y entrevistas individuales en las que Hollowell podía volver a aprender una palabra o dos.
En un esfuerzo por crear conciencia sobre la afasia, Adrienne también alienta a su padre a compartir su experiencia (lo mejor que pueda) y se ha acercado a los espectadores para preguntarles si podrían compartir algún tratamiento nuevo.
Lo que queda claro al ver sus interacciones es que donde Hollowell podría expresarse de manera diferente, gran parte de su identidad central, como su amor por su arte y su familia, aún es visible.
