—BEST DRILL—

Bosch GSR18V-535FCB15

Lakota Gambill

This kit, though expensive, makes the potent and astonishingly versatile GSR18V more than a woodworking tool. It can easily drill and drive in metal. Its accessory chucks attach quickly and firmly—just twist them on. Once connected, they enable the Bosch to drill or drive around corners and in tight spots.

—BEST SANDER—

Bosch Get65-5N

Lakota Gambill

GET65-5N Sander

Bosch
boschtools.com

$279.00

If versatility is top of mind, the Get65-5N is your tool. It functions as a five-inch random-orbit disc sander. But click the turbo setting to engage a direct drive/eccentric orbit, and it comes close to a disc grinder. We sanded white pine in standard mode, rough-sawn red oak in turbo, and switched back to standard to clean up a fir plywood workbench.

—BEST CIRCULAR SAW—

DeWalt DCS573B

Lakota Gambill

DCS537B Saw

DeWalt
amazon.com

$181.35

DeWalt took its 20-volt cordless circular saw (a perfectly respectable power tool) and sent it to the gym. The result is this new and more muscular DCS573B, capable of running on a standard 20-volt Max battery or the brand’s hulking 20/60 Flex Volt power pack. With the former battery, it’s a flyweight that slices Douglas fir as if it were butter. But it soon runs out of juice. With the Flex Volt, it cuts and cuts—and then cuts some more.

—BEST MAUL—

Fiskars Pro IsoCore

Trevor Raab

Pro IsoCore 6-Lb. Maul

Fiskars
amazon.com

$173.79

Generations of log-splitters have felt the sting of a maul handle during missed swings. The Fiskars Pro IsoCore makes it a little less painful. We found that the shock from overstrikes where the handle met wood is vastly reduced —a steel insert and insulation sleeve below the blade ensure no damage is done.

—BEST ELECTRIC MOWER—

Cub Cadet SC 300 IntelliPower

Trevor Raab

SC 300 IntelliPower Mower

Cub Cadet
cubcadet.com

$399.00

Cutting tall grass in the spring and early summer can severely tax a mower. To help the SC300 switch easily from normal cutting to severe, Cub Cadet equipped it with a sensitive electronic governor and a two-position throttle-control lever that lets you choose between average and tough conditions. Shifting to the high-power position increases engine rpm and boosts output by 20 percent. We flipped the lever and wheeled the SC300 into knee-deep weeds. Taking cuts with half the 21-inch deck width at a time, we found the machine more than capable of handling the load. After a few passes, we started cutting with the full deck width. This Cub held up, producing a very good quality of cut.

—BEST HAND VACUUM—

Black & Decker Spillbuster BHSB320JP

Courtesy Black+Decker

Spillbuster BHSB320JP Hand Vacuum

Black & Decker
amazon.com

$99.00

Black & Decker made consumer-products history with the Dustbuster, and it may have done so again with this cordless cleaning tool that’s both a dry vacuum and mini steam cleaner. We tried it around the house on dust and dirt as well as sawdust and food stains on carpet. It’s a light (4.8-pound) workhorse.

—BEST FLASHLIGHT—

Maglite ML300L

Trevor Raab

ML300L Flashlight

Maglite
maglite.com

$89.95

To test this durable flashlight, we shined it in a field to gauge beam distance, dropped it 20 times, and ran the battery down (almost 16 hours). While we’re on longevity, the replacable D-cells hold their power for five years. We liked this light so much, we made a series with our name. For 20 percent off, enter “PM20 ” on Maglite’s site.

—BEST WORK JACKET—

Caterpillar Triton Insulated

Trevor Raab

Triton Insulated Jacket

Caterpillar
amazon.com

$109.99

Cat’s Triton quickly became a favorite, as we discovered feature after feature. Its shell is made from a heavy waterproof, windproof, breathable material with four-way stretch. We touched our elbows together in front of us and the jacket didn’t bind us up. But it’s the little, thoughtful elements that enamored us to the Triton, like the angled cuffs (shorter to the thumb side) that stay out of the way when you’re working with your hands.

—BEST WORK BOOTS—

Caterpillar Excavator Superlite

Trevor Raab

Excavator Superlite Boots

Caterpillar
amazon.com

$160.00

While there are a number of features to praise, comfort is at the top of the list for the Excavator Superlite. The boot felt light from the start, per our tester, who ended up running a half mile in their pair to get out of a downpour. A composite safety toe and a contoured footbed help give the Excavator Superlite its athletic-shoe feel. And the rubber outsole resists slipping in both wet and oily conditions.

—BEST GAS MOWER—

Toro 21382

Trevor Raab

21382 Mower

Toro
powerequipmentwarehouse.com

$599.99

This is a beauty of a mower, with a cast- aluminum deck and a smooth-running Honda GCV160 engine. It’s an effective bagger and mulcher, even of moist grass. Equipped with rear-wheel drive and the Personal Pace system (the farther you push the drive bar, the faster the mower goes), it’s an effective hill climber and decent at sidehill cutting. The 21382 has average-height (7.5-inch) tires on all four corners, so it’s going to bump up and down a bit on washboard surfaces. But the good news is that it’s equipped with far-higher-quality tires than we’re used to seeing. We didn’t notice them picking up grass on damp surfaces.

—BEST STRING TRIMMER—

Makita XRU15

Courtesy Makita U.S.A., Inc.

XRU15 String Trimmer

Makita
amazon.com

$389.00

We admit that this is an expensive, professional-duty product. For this price, the Makita better be good, and it is. This is one of the best string trimmers—gas or electric—out of the too many to count that we’ve tested. Its three speed settings lend more control than you get with the average trimmer, and all three have more than enough oomph for average jobs. We also love the momentary reverse feature: Push a switch and the head briefly rotates in the opposite direction to clear off grass and weeds that are stuck and wound around it. Brilliant.

—BEST SNOWBLOWER—

Ego Power+ SNT2405

Courtesy EGO

The steel-framed SNT2405 is very much like gas-powered units of its size, except for its electric motor and two 56-volt, 7.5-Ah batteries. Those two things make it distinctly quieter and lighter than its fuel-sucking counterparts. Using it won’t hurt your hearing or wake the neighbors, and you won’t be laboring to move it around in the garage to store. Plus, the SNT2405 is one of very few cordless snowblowers with two stages. It threw our wet sawdust well (which we use to replicate snow when there’s no fresh stuff), so it will have no problem with even the heaviest real snow.

—BEST CHAINSAW—

Stihl MSA 220 C-B

Courtesy Stihl Inc.

Stihl MSA 200 C-B Chainsaw

$390.00
stihlusa.com

Wood cutting is now easier, faster, quieter, and cleaner. This saw is one of the best power tools we’ve ever used, the first powered by a battery that can hold its own against a gas-engine model. Equipped with a 2.6-Ah battery and brushless motor, it sliced through hardwood logs easily. We enjoyed its trigger responsiveness, torque, and weight distribution. All of these combined let us dig in up to the full length of the bar and pivot through the cut with ease.

—BEST SATELLITE COMMUNICATOR—

Bivy Stick Blue

Courtesy Bivy

Bivy Stick Blue Satellite Communicator

Bivy is the no-annual- contract service provider of the sat comms world. You buy credits, each good for one action via the app, such as sending a message. As for the hardware, the new Blue gets upgraded with physical check-in and SOS buttons.

—BEST HIKING BOOTS—

Vasque Breeze AT GTX

Trevor Raab

Breeze AT GTX Hiking Boots

Vasque
amazon.com

$189.99

The Breeze has been a mainstay in Vasque’s hiking-boot collection for years. And—in a case of a good thing getting better—the new All Terrain version comes with a taller collar made of a molded TPU mesh, which delivered stability without adding weight. The arch support and dual-density midsole kept us fresh after a strenuous eight-mile loop.

—BEST TENT—

Decathlon 2 Seconds Easy

Lakota Gambill

2 Seconds Easy Tent

Decathlon
decathlon.com

$199.00

We’ve seen the numbers by now: 2020 was the year when people flocked to campsites and hiking trails in droves to get their dose of socially distanced adventure. And, as the name states, the 2 Seconds Easy tent isn’t intimidating to use for those who may just be getting into camping, nor will it make too much of a dent in their bank accounts. The poles are hinged (as opposed to slotting into one another) and come together in two hubs. Connected to these hubs are cords and handles, which lead out through ports in the tent’s fly. Pull the handles, and the tent pops up. That kind of accessibility deserves to be celebrated.

—BEST SLEEPING BAG—

Sierra Designs Taquito

Trevor Raab

Taquito Sleeping Bag

Sierra Designs
amazon.com

$199.95

The Taquito is a fine choice for side sleepers or anyone looking for a moderately priced down bag. The company smartly placed two strips of small square baffles that run up the sides. These are densely packed with the same 550-fill hydrophobic down used in the rest of the bag, and it allows for side sleepers to compress the insulation without entirely zapping its heat-trapping loft. We were warm on early spring nights, as long as we used an insulated sleeping pad.

—BEST CAR-CAMPING MATTRESS—

Luno Air Mattress 2.0

Trevor Raab

Air Mattress 2.0

Luno
lunolife.com

$224.99

It’s not uncommon for station wagon or SUV owners to eschew a tent and bunk right in their rig. Luno’s Air Mattress 2.0 is for those folks, transforming a vehicle’s combined backseat and trunk space into a bed. Four inches thick at full inflation, it’s made with burly 300-denier oxford fabric and is long enough to accommodate people as tall as 6-foot-2.

—BEST COOLER—

Yeti V Series

Trevor Raab

We haven’t seen another luxury cooler quite like the Yeti V Series. Yes, there are other stainless-steel ice chests that look great, but none promise the performance this one delivers. We pitted it against the brand’s Tundra, and filled each cooler with roughly 20 pounds of ice and several seltzer cans. By the end of the test, the staying power of the vacuum panels on the V Series became clear. The cans we kept in it for all 72 hours were nearly 2.5 degrees colder, on average, than those in the Tundra. Even more impressively, the V Series retained 44 percent more ice at the end of the test.

—BEST ROOFTOP TENT—

Roofnest Falcon

Courtesy Roofnest

Falcon Rooftop Tent

Rooftnest
roofnest.com

$3,395.00

Now, we have no beef with sleeping on the ground. But after camping in the Falcon, we can vouch for the convenience and utility of rooftop tents. This one’s aluminum hardshell makes for a slim, seven-inch profile on top of a vehicle, which doesn’t drag mpg down as much as the softshell variety. It also makes setup easy; all we had to do was pop the latches and push the lid up for the pistons to take over. And the foam mattress was comfortably firm.

—BEST KNIFE—

Benchmade 533 Mini Bugout

Courtesy Benchmade

533 Mini Bugout Knife

Benchmade
rei.com

$119.00

This pint-size version of Benchmade’s popular Bugout folder is lighter, shorter, and features a blade that’s nearly half an inch smaller. Still, the discreet knife packs some power. The CPM-S30V blade quickly and cleanly sliced cardboard and rope in our testing, and the textured Grivory handle felt comfortable and secure even when we laid into it.

—BEST HEADLAMP—

Biolite 750

Courtesy Biolite

HeadLamp 750

BioLite
amazon.com

$99.95

Biolite has baked some helpful tech into the 750, the most noteworthy of which is the Constant Mode. Many headlamps are designed to dim after several minutes. The 750 still does that unless you hold a button on the battery pack to turn on Constant Mode. It’s good for peace of mind, knowing that we would have 500 lumens at our disposal (or the full 750 for 30 seconds if we pushed the Burst button).

—BEST BACKPACK—

Gregory Maven

Lakota Gambill

Maven 65 Backpack

Gregory
amazon.com

$249.95

$222.46 (11% off)

When we slid on the 65-liter Maven, it glommed onto our back, fitting naturally to our body as we scrambled over rocks and bounded down trails. That made for more comfortable trekking. Gregory accomplishes this superb fit with a new suspension system on the Maven and its men’s equivalent, the Paragon. It’s called FreeFloat Hybrid, and it’s adjustable, with two mesh panels attached to the hip belt that allowed the pack to move with us exceptionally well, especially as we were hiking quickly. The back ventilation could have been better, but we’ll take a little sweat over an unwieldy pack any day.

—BEST WATER FILTER—

MSR Thru-Link

Courtesy MSR

Last year MSR brought its in-line filter—developed for the military in the 2000s—to the masses. Light and inexpensive, the Thru-Link is also dead simple: Clip it into your reservoir’s drinking tube for easy access to clean water. (It’s more complicated if you don’t have a two-part hose.) Our first drink took more suction than normal, but once the Thru-Link was primed, we hardly noticed it.

—BEST ELECTRIC COOLER—

Dometic CFX3 75 DZ

Trevor Raab

CFX3 75DZ Electric Cooler

Dometic
amazon.com

$1,195.99

As wondrous as modern coolers are, they still rely on a constant flow of ice to work; that effort ranges from annoying when you need to fill it before a backyard cookout to Sisyphean levels of frustration if you’re camping or overlanding. Dometic’s electric coolers can run off your car’s DC current, a standard electrical outlet, or even the brand’s long-lasting PLB40 battery, which can power a CFX cooler for a weekend. And this one has two sections, one which can drop the temp below freezing. You’ll never have to bother with ice again and still have fresh salsa, cold beer, or ice-cream sandwiches on any way-out-there corner of the planet. This freezer-fridge monster costs a lot, but smaller single-zone coolers start at $900.

—BEST POWERBANK—

Goal Zero Yeti 500X

Adrienne Donica

Yeti 500X Power Bank

Goal Zero
amazon.com

$699.95

Meant for outdoor pursuits, the Yeti 500X is smaller, faster-charging, and lighter than the previous version, yet has 77 more watt-hours. It also boasts USB-A, USB-C, six-millimeter, car port, and AC inverter outputs. On a single charge, it got us through two and a half days of heavy use while working from home.

—BEST DEVICE SANITIZER—

Mophie UV

Lakota Gambill

We live in a time when sanitizing and disinfecting have become part of our daily routines. As one of the objects we interact with the most, our phone is particularly prone to catching germs and, according to scientists, dirtier than a toilet seat. Enter Mophie’s UV sanitizer. It can remove common surface bacteria almost completely (a claimed 99.99 percent) via a UV-C light—a known tool for disinfecting surfaces. The process is both quiet and quick, taking about five minutes. We appreciated that the sanitizer doubles as a charger.

—BEST FACE MASK—

Outdoor Research Essential

Lakota Gambill

Outdoor Research Essential Face Mask

$20.00
amazon.com

Few of us imagined 2020 would see the face mask become an everyday part of people’s wardrobes. But it did, and many apparel manufacturers have come out with their own designs. The one that’s performed the best for us has been the Essential. It’s tall enough that it covers our nose and chin comfortably, and the adjustable ear loops keep it snug but not too tight. We were fine wearing it during moderately strenuous exercise, since the polyester is thin enough to not make us feel smothered.

—BEST HUMIDIFIER—

Honeywell HCM-350

Lakota Gambill

HCM-350 Humidifier

Honeywell
amazon.com

$159.89

After testing the HCM-350 for months, we believe it’s the best choice for most people’s homes. As a self-regulating evaporative humidifier, it releases water vapor—rather than a light mist—which won’t puddle on the floor. We ran it in a 250-square-foot room for 18 hours on medium, and the humidity rose from 25 to 40 percent. And despite its power, the HCM-350 is quiet enough for a bedroom.

—BEST ROBOT VACUUM—

Roborock S6 MaxV

Lakota Gambill

S6 MaxV Robot Vacuum

Roborock
amazon.com

$749.99

We’ve heard the horror stories: Pet accidents and robot vacuums don’t mesh. Good, then, that the S6 is the first vac available with poop-avoidance tech—our term, not Roborock’s. The company accomplished this with machine learning, employing thousands of reference photos and two cameras on the S6. What’s more, it has both LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and vSLAM (visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). It was interesting to see the S6 run more efficient patterns with subsequent cleanings, making fewer adjustments to pick up the flour, sawdust, kidney beans, and rice we had scattered on the floor.

—BEST DOORBELL—

Eufy Video Doorbell 2K

Trevor Raab

Eufy’s 2K replaces a traditional doorbell using existing wiring and connects to your home’s Wi-Fi. It’s easy to install, set up with the app, and connect—all that took us 45 minutes. In our testing, our phone pinged with alerts about deliveries, cars entering our driveway, and people ringing the doorbell, of course. Clips of those events are saved, and image and sound quality are excellent. It’s been a useful upgrade—and solved some mysteries along the way.

—BEST THERMOSTAT—

Ecobee Smart

Lakota Gambill

Smart Thermostat

Ecobee
amazon.com

$249.00

$219.00 (12% off)

We knew the Ecobee was a winner when we called customer service at 10 p.m. on a Friday and got a helpful answer to a wiring question in minutes. That simplicity carries through to the thermostat’s functionality, as it was easy to control from the app. It works with standalone sensors (one comes included) that monitor temperature and activity to adjust temps in the rooms you’re actually using, saving money.

—BEST MOUSE—

Logitech MX Anywhere 3

Courtesy Logitech

MX Anywhere 3 Mouse

Logitech
amazon.com

$79.99

The wireless Anywhere 3 is compact and versatile, ideally suited for the deskless, remote-work reality in which many of us now live. The thing scrolls blisteringly fast (up to 1,000 lines per second), with an accurate wheel. And, as per the name, the Anywhere 3 delivers precise tracking on almost any surface. We tried it on various pieces of furniture, including a glass coffee table and a metal side table, with consistently impressive results.

—BEST SKILLET—

Stargazer 12-In.

Lakota Gambill

12-In. Skillet

Stargazer
stargazercastiron.com

$145.00

With its nonstick surface, Stargazer’s skillet reigned supreme in our testing. Even against other, more expensive brands, it’s more balanced in terms of weight, conductivity, and heat distribution. Though it doesn’t have spouts, the rolled rim offered precise pouring. With a large helper handle that’s usable while you’re wearing an oven mitt, it’s as comfortable as it is functional.

—BEST MATTRESS—

Casper Wave Hybrid

Amy Wolff

Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress

$2,206.00

This hybrid combines supportive springs with comfortable foam and features Casper’s new Zoned Support system, which increases support in areas you need it most (under the shoulders and hips) and relaxes it in others. It boosts that reinforcement with gel pods. Our tester said she felt real benefits. “The zone at the head of the mattress is firmer, while the middle zone compresses further to cradle your midsection while aiding in spinal alignment.”

—BEST GRILL—

Masterbuilt Gravity Series 560

Courtesy Masterbuilt

Gravity Series 560 Grill

Masterbuilt
amazon.com

$497.00

With a temperature range of 150 to 700 degrees, the Masterbuilt 560 Digital Charcoal Grill is a multipurpose backyard cooker. Smoking with it is as easy as setting the temperature and a timer. Using lump charcoal will provide a smoky flavor, and you can add wood chips in the ash bucket, where they’ll burn slowly as embers fall on them. On our first cook, a small brisket we had on for almost six hours at 220 developed a fantastic crust—it was so easy and so tasty. Burgers and chicken on the bone came out similarly well. If you love the taste of charcoal-grilled food but cleaning up ash has held you back, Masterbuilt took that hassle off your hands. Due to the vertical hopper, the charcoal flows down as it burns, with the ash falling into a bucket at the bottom. Just open a door and empty soot from the container.

—BEST HANDHELD CONSOLE—

Nintendo Switch Lite

Trevor Raab

Switch Lite Console

Nintendo
amazon.com

$199.99

Compared to the regular Switch (which has been sporadically in and out of stock for months), the Lite is smaller, one piece, and doesn’t connect to a TV. But those aren’t drawbacks. Essentially the latest Gameboy, the Lite is meant for portability, and screen real estate is still respectable at 5.5 inches. Gamers who prefer handheld solo play will take to it. During our testing, we got roughly four hours of battery life. Hard buttons are in welcome contrast to tapping on a touchscreen while playing mobile games. And the Lite reinforces one of the core commandments of great gadget design: Simpler is better.

—BEST HEADPHONES—

Sony WH-1000XM4

Courtesy Sony

WH-1000XM4 Headphones

Sony
amazon.com

$349.99

$278.00 (21% off)

A follow-up to our favorite wireless cans, Sony’s WH-1000XM4 brings subtle but meaningful tech improvements while retaining the same design and uncompromisingly awesome sound. That comes courtesy of 40-millimeter drivers with outstanding frequency response that ranges from four to 40,000 Hz. When it comes to noise-canceling capabilities, they’re among the best, thanks to a pair of microphones per ear cup and a sophisticated processor. Bonus: Sony equipped the WH-1000XM4 with a sensor, which stops the audio when you take them off in wireless mode.

—BEST TABLET—

Microsoft Surface Pro 7

Trevor Raab

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 Tablet

$788.00
amazon.com

After years of tweaking, Microsoft created the ultimate two-in-one device. Though its design hasn’t strayed much, the Surface boasts better graphics, Intel Core i5 with a fanless design, improved Surface Pen compatibility, and a USB-C. Microsoft solved many limitations that hold hybrids back, and this one excels as a work machine or just as a tablet for use around the house.

—BEST SMARTWATCH—

Apple Watch Series 6

Apple Watch Series 6

Apple
amazon.com

$399.00

$339.00 (15% off)

The most ubiquitous smartwatch looks unchanged from earlier generations, but it’s faster and brighter, without diminishing its battery life. Apple’s using a new S6 chip, which makes apps launch up to 20 percent faster and boosts the brightness of the always-on display so it’s easier to read on sunny days. Perhaps the biggest update is that this watch charges faster than previous models. That means you can wear it to bed, tracking your sleep, and top off the battery while you jump in the shower in the morning.

—BEST ROUTER—

Google Nest Wi-Fi

Lakota Gambill

Nest Wi-Fi Router

Google
amazon.com

$297.00

If you’re already living in Google’s ecosystem, you won’t find a better Wi-Fi extender. Each hub of the Nest doubles as a Google Assistant-powered speaker that can stream music or podcasts and do a lot of other voice-enabled skills. Performance is great, too. The claimed 3,800 square feet of coverage proved accurate in our testing. Download rates were 201.6 mbps a foot from the router and 81.5 mbps at the point in the house farthest from a hub, about 70 feet—still fast enough for movies and Zoom video conferences.

—BEST LAPTOP—

Apple MacBook Air

Lakota Gambill

After a spec bump and, more importantly, a new keyboard, the current Air is our easiest-to- recommend laptop. Across Apple’s lineup, it delivers the best balance of speed and portability. We prefer its row of keys to the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar. Though we’d pay $100 extra for the Core i5 processor and $200 for 512GB, the base 256GB is enough for most. We hope the next version upgrades the 720p camera, adds Wi-Fi 6, and gets better cooling. But none of that detracts from its excellence as a daily computer.

—BEST WIRELESS EARBUDS—

EarFun Air

Lakota Gambill

Lots of wireless earbuds try to emulate the success of Apple AirPods; few do it well. The EarFun Air is an exception. Connectivity is excellent. We tested it with a phone on an armband and behind our back in a fanny pack (where many headphones cut out) and couldn’t break the Bluetooth signal. Sound pours in dynamic and crisp.

—BEST ACTION CAM—

GoPro Hero 9 Black

Lakota Gambill

The Hero 8 claimed to be a gimbal killer—and for the most part, it was. But the Hero 9 Black takes in-camera stabilization to the next level. GoPro packed the horizon-leveling feature from its app into the camera itself to give you the smoothest footage yet, even if you’re jostling up and down mountains and rocky trails. Everything gets bigger in the Hero 9, too. It records in 5K, has a larger rear screen, and uses a massive battery that lasts up to 30 percent longer.
