La escuela debe sentirse como un espacio seguro. Pero después de la trágica noticia de otro tiroteo masivo, muchos niños están muertos de miedo. Como padre o maestro, ayudar a las mentes jóvenes a deshacer monstruosidades tan impensables puede ser una tarea abrumadora. Especialmente cuando, con toda honestidad, incluso los adultos están aterrorizados.
Katelyn Campbell, una psicóloga clínica de Carolina del Sur, trabajó con niños de escuela primaria después del tiroteo en Sandy Hook. Recientemente compartió una idea simple que ayudó entonces, con la esperanza de que ayude ahora.

«Los niños, como los adultos, quieren sentirse útiles cuando se sienten impotentes», continuó, diciendo que dibujar les dio algo útil que hacer.
También se necesitó algo de presión para concentrarse en hacer que los «otros niños» se sintieran mejor. Campbell señaló que incluso si tienen miedo, es «más fácil hablar de ‘otros niños'».
En lugar de usar la palabra «seguro», que puede «ser un concepto cargado para los niños que nunca se sienten seguros», Campbell usó «tranquilo» y «pacífico», que realmente resonó entre los estudiantes.
Pero en realidad, les dio a los niños algo que «hacer» que parecía útil. Los niños, como los adultos, quieren sentirse útiles cuando se sienten impotentes. Y les encantó la idea de poder ayudar a «otros niños» a sentirse mejor (ellos eran los asustados, pero es más fácil hablar de «otros niños»)

Pronto, la escuela se llenó de «arcoíris, playas, hermosas flores, parques infantiles y paisajes felices», que permanecieron en pie durante semanas.
«Estoy bastante segura de que también ayudó a los adultos», bromeó.
La terapia del arte puede ser una herramienta valiosa para cualquier edad, pero puede ser especialmente útil para los niños que (con suerte) no han tenido las emociones complejas y difíciles de articular que vienen con el trauma. Como explica la psicóloga Cathy Malchiodi en su libro «The Art Therapy Sourcebook», «el lenguaje del arte visual (colores, formas, líneas e imágenes) nos habla de formas que las palabras no pueden».
La incorporación de un sentido de ayudar a los demás y centrarse en imágenes «calmadas» fue otra capa brillante que Campbell agregó a su ejercicio, y pronto recibió una ola de apoyo por su sugerencia. En general, la gente se sintió aliviada e inspirada.
